Belinda Mellor lives with her husband and daughter and far too many animals on a lifestyle block near Nelson; a place the family came to on holiday some years back and forgot to leave. A background in theology and applied spirituality make her eminently suited to a life of goat milking and egg collecting.
At the age of five she won a school award for ‘free expression’ and has not stopped writing since. She was an inaugural winner of an Ian St James literary award for Bronwen’s Dowry, a fantasy story based in the world she would later set her Silvana novels in (published in the Collins anthology At the Stroke of Twelve). Since then she has been awarded a literary bursary and an award for a character-driven story. Numerous of her non-fiction and occasional fiction pieces have appeared in magazines and local newspapers, and a play for children was performed by a theatre-in-education company.
Her published works include the two Silvana novels: The Greening and The Turning and, most recently, Bronwen’s Dowry was reprinted in the anthology: All These Shiny Worlds.
Her current projects include completing a YA faerie story based on Irish folklore, about two sets of changelings and their fae counterparts; writing the third Silvana book – Restoration; resurrecting a series of children’s stories about a fire-loving salamander family (originally written for an animation company that folded before the project could be realised); and completing a collaborative art book based on the story of creation and why the Creator put THAT tree in such an accessible position.

Silvana. The Greening by Belinda Mellor.
Wondrous and haunting.
Like the last lingering sweet note of a plucked harp string this story echoed through my thoughts long after I’d reluctantly closed the final page. My best attempt to categorize this wondrous story with its eloquent prose would be as a literary fantasy. The imagery is hauntingly beautiful and a feast for the senses – floral scents and musical lilts almost wafting off the turning pages. I’m delighted that the next in this series is now out. Silvana is a storytelling masterpiece – highly recommend!
Silvana : The Turning by Belinda Mellor
A haunting masterpiece.
Bravo. Bravo. Standing ovation. If this book was a piece of classical music, after the last note played, the last page turned, the final sentence read, there would be a pause as the audience reconciled itself that a masterpiece, an intricate weaving of words into raw human emotions, has sadly come to an end. Feelings of loss. Hands unwilling to close the book, wanting to hold onto the threads of the story for just a bit longer. To stay within the world of the Silvanii, which at this twilight moment feels more real than our own flesh and blood lives. A sadder tale than The Greening, one that cuts a bit deeper into our soul, the pages almost weeping with sorrow, but also a message of hope and love. The seeds for the next story have been firmly sown and I await with ardent anticipation Book Three.
